Copilot Citation

One appearance of a page as a named source in an answer from Microsoft Copilot or Bing’s AI summaries, as Bing counts it.

Bing introduced the count in February 2026: for each site, its citations a day, the pages cited and the grounding queries that led to them (Bing Webmaster Blog). It is the first engine’s own record of how often an assistant quotes a site.

Why It Matters

It shows the answers follow their index. The studio’s reference network drew 17.5 million Copilot citations over eleven months, on 15,839 searches and 48,040 pages, and kept setting records after Google removed it: two million in June 2026, 2.72 million in the first 22 days of September. Google’s answers read Google’s index; Copilot reads Bing’s.

How the Studio Uses It

Citations are read per page and against the form: a quoted page that brings no enquiries is a page the firm is being cited by, not one it is being chosen through. The test that matters joins citations, form opens and searches for the firm’s own name. The full record: Every Engine Keeps Its Own Record.

Asked About
Copilot Citation.

Is a citation a visit?

No. It is an appearance as a source; the click, if any, comes after.

Why does Copilot cite pages Google never shows?

Because it reads another index and searches in its own short terms: 40 % of the network’s cited pages never appeared in Google’s search data.
