Manual Action

A penalty a human reviewer at Google applies when pages break its spam policies, which removes some or all of a site from Google’s results.

Google issues a manual action when a reviewer has found pages on a site that do not comply with its spam policies; the site’s owner is told in Search Console’s Manual actions report (Search Console Help). Among the practices the policies name is scaled content abuse: many pages generated mainly to rank, whatever made them (Google Search Central).

Why It Matters

It is the clearest case of what one engine can and cannot end. On 30 May 2026 Google issued a manual action against the whole domain of the studio’s own reference network, for “major spam problems”. Its AI answers had shown the network 15,000 to 19,000 times a day in late May; on 29 May, the day before the notice, they showed it 138 times, and after 12 June never. Bing kept sending 31,000 to 39,000 clicks a month with no break, and Copilot cited the network more than ever. The record is in Every Engine Keeps Its Own Record.

What the Studio Learned

A manual action is the decision of one company about its own results. It ends what that company shows; it does not end the pages, the readers who arrive through other engines, or the citations of assistants that read another index. The part of the network that kept its value was the part decided by people: plain definitions with one job each. Since then the rule is short: machines produce, people decide, and pages multiply only from data a firm holds that nobody else has.

What It Is Not

It is not an algorithm update, which moves rankings for many sites at once without a notice. A manual action names the site, says what was found, and can be answered with a reconsideration request once the pages are fixed.

How to Check It on Your Own Site

  1. Open Search Console’s Manual actions report: it says “No issues detected” when there is none.
  2. If your site produces pages in bulk, ask what each page offers that no other page does.
  3. Watch the signs that came first on the network: impressions rising sharply while clicks do not follow, then a day when clicks break.

Asked About
Manual Action.

Does a manual action affect Bing or Copilot?

No. Each engine keeps its own record; Google’s decision ends Google’s results.

Can a site recover?

After the pages are fixed, the owner can ask Google to reconsider; the decision is Google’s.

Is AI-written content a manual action by itself?

No. The policies act on pages made mainly to rank at scale, however they were produced.
