AI Answer
A written answer an assistant or a search engine gives to a question, built from pages it retrieves and quotes, before or instead of a list of links.
Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode, Microsoft Copilot and the assistants built on them answer in sentences and name their sources. The buyer may never open a search result: the quoted page has already done the work. So the useful question becomes which page the machine quotes, and whether it is the firm’s.
Why It Matters
Most AI demand is search demand. On a firm’s site the studio read in September 2026, 81 % of the citations Copilot gave the site came on searches the site already appeared for in Google; on the studio’s reference network the share was two thirds. The answers inherit search’s map of a firm: when Google removed the reference network, its AI answers dropped it the day before the notice, while Copilot, reading Bing’s index, cited it more every month. A page is quoted by the engines that keep it.
How the Studio Uses It
Four findings from 17.5 million Copilot citations on the reference network shape how the studio builds pages: 40 % of the cited pages never appeared in Google’s search data; pages that define one term carried half of the citations; the top 1 % of pages drew 35 %; and weekend citations ran at about half the weekday level. The paper The Page the Machine Quotes sets them out, with what makes a page quotable.
What It Is Not
An AI answer is not a ranking: the pages that rank and the pages that are quoted overlap but are not the same list. Nor does it need special optimisation. Google’s own guidance says there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode beyond the foundations of search (Google Search Central).
How to Check It on Your Own Site
- Read Copilot’s citations of your site in Bing Webmaster Tools’ AI Performance report (Bing Webmaster Blog).
- Read Google’s AI features in Search Console’s generative AI report (Google Search Central).
- Ask your buyers’ twenty questions in AI Mode and in Copilot, and write down who is named and which page is quoted.
Asked About
AI Answer.
Do I need a separate AI strategy?
No. Most AI demand is search demand; the same pages serve both.
Can I see which of my pages are quoted?
Yes: Bing’s AI Performance report for Copilot, Search Console’s generative AI report for Google.
Why is my competitor quoted and not me?
Usually because their page states the fact more plainly, on a page of its own, and agrees with the rest of their site.
